Q: When I try logging into Udemy, it gives the error, "Suspicious Activity Detected" and won't let me log in. What should I do?
Currently Udemy, presented by Gale, is only available to traditional Library card holders, not eCards, and for extra security Gale has applied geo-location measures that prevent Udemy access from outside a given library's district (in our case, Johnson County, KS). This is a temporary solution to prevent fraudulent use through the library. We know many of our patrons are frequent travelers and are part of the larger Kansas City metro area, Kansas, Missouri and beyond, and we are working in conjunction with Gale to provide secure, reliable Udemy access to all of our library card holders.
If you have a traditional Library card and get the error, "Suspicious Activity Detected, we cannot verify your library affiliation," when attempting to sign in for Udemy, please contact us with the following information:
- Library card number
- Screenshot of the error (please include the web address, error message, and time stamp in your screenshot)
- A description of the steps you took that led to the error

Udemy has been in the consumer market since 2010 but is new to libraries. They have partnered with Gale, a well-respected library content provider, to adapt their product to meet library needs. This is a work in progress. Throughout 2020, Gale and Udemy are fine-tuning their systems based on feedback from library users, and the Library is providing access to this product now for our patrons who would like to explore Udemy content immediately and shape its future in libraries.
