Q: Credit Reports

How often should I get a credit report? Is there a way to get it for free?

Regularly requesting a credit report is a good way to gauge your standing with credit lenders as well as monitor any data breaches from hackers.  Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, all consumers are entitled to request & receive a free report each year from the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, & Transunion).

Check out this page from the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection on which agencies have access to your consumer info, why your credit report is important, & how to request your free report. It's possible there are errors in your report, & they just might be costing you money! Luckily, the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection also published with this handy article, which points out not only what types of information to look for, but also the steps you'll need to follow to submit a dispute.
