Q: Have there been any Kentucky Derby winners from Kansas?
Lawrin was an American thoroughbred, owned by Herbert M. Woolf. He won the Kentucky Derby in 1938, and he is the only Kansas bred winner of the Derby. Lawrin died in 1955, and was buried on Woolford Farm, which is an area located behind our Corinth Library. You can still visit his grave in a cul-de-sac at 59 Le Mans Court, Prairie Village, KS 66208.
Prairie Village Mayor Ron Shaffer proclaimed May 5, 2007 as Lawrin's Legacy Day. You can find the story in the Prairie Village Voice June 2007 issue, page 3.
