Answer

Local Observatories:

Powell Observatory

Located in Louisburg, Kansas.

It has many stargazing programs and events during the summer and fall. At the Powell Observatory you can gaze up into the night sky through the Ruisinger telescope, named after the ASKC member who designed it, which has a 30" mirror capable of gathering over 11,900 times the light received by the human eye alone. This means the Ruisinger telescope is capable of seeing both bright and faint objects ranging from something as bright as the moon and as faint as the Andromeda Galaxy over 2,500,000 light-years away, which translates into almost 15,000,000,000,000,000,000 or 15 quintillion miles away!

You can view the night sky through this powerful telescope during their many educational programs scheduled every Saturday night beginning at 8:30 p.m. during the summer and fall. The cost is free but they do ask for at least a $6 donation for this spectacular observatory

The Warkoczewski "Warko" Observatory

Located on the Royal Hall at the University of Missouri – Kansas City campus.

It is open to the public on clear Friday nights, dusk to about 10 – 11 p.m., May 1 – Oct. 31.

The main telescope is a custom designed, 16” Newtonian reflector and is operated by the Astronomical Society of Kansas City for the university. Through the telescope you will be able to view the moon, planets, bright star clusters and nebulae. Admission is free.
